The BCBA Exam in 2026: What's on It and How to Pass

The BCBA exam is harder to pass than it has been in years. This guide covers the format, the content outline, fees and retake rules, and a study approach built around what actually moves your score.

The 9 domains and how much each one counts

Since 2025, the exam follows the 6th Edition Test Content Outline. Each domain carries a fixed number of the 175 scored questions, which tells you exactly where your study time is worth the most.

DomainScored questionsShare
A. Philosophical Foundations85%
B. Concepts & Principles2414%
C. Measurement & Data2112%
D. Experimental Design137%
E. Ethics2213%
F. Behavior Assessment2313%
G. Behavior-Change Procedures2514%
H. Selecting Interventions2011%
I. Supervision & Management1911%

Behavior-Change Procedures (25), Concepts and Principles (24), Behavior Assessment (23), Ethics (22), and Measurement (21) together account for 115 of the 175 scored questions — about two thirds of the exam.

BCBA pass rates

The BACB publishes pass rates every year. In 2025, 51% of first-time candidates passed — the lowest rate on record — down from 66% in 2020. Candidates retaking the exam passed at just 23%, and retake attempts (13,196) outnumbered first attempts (9,955).

The retake number is the important one. Most people who fail study more the second time — but in the same way. If your first score report showed weak domains, the problem is usually specific concepts inside them, not the total number of hours.

Fees and retakes

Certification application (BACB)$245
Exam appointment (Pearson VUE)$125 per attempt
Retake application (BACB)$140 per retake

After a failed attempt, the retake application becomes available in your BACB account within 48 hours, and you must wait at least 30 days before your next appointment. Fees can change — confirm them in the current BCBA Handbook before you register.

How to study for the BCBA exam

1. Take a baseline before you study

Start with a short diagnostic across all nine domains. It shows where your score is coming from, so you don't spend weeks reviewing what you already know. Baseline's free diagnostic takes about 15 minutes.

2. Weight your time by the exam blueprint

A gap in Behavior-Change Procedures (25 questions) costs you three times as much as the same gap in Philosophical Foundations (8 questions). Prioritize large domains where your accuracy is lowest.

3. Practice applying concepts, not memorizing definitions

Nearly every BCBA question is a short scenario. Knowing the definition of negative reinforcement isn't enough — you have to recognize it when a car's seatbelt chime stops. Practice with scenario-based questions and read the explanation for every answer, including the ones you got right.

4. Review your mistakes until they stick

Keep a running list of questions you missed and come back to them days later. If you miss the same concept twice, it's a gap, not a slip.

5. Build stamina with full-length timed mocks

185 questions in 4 hours is about 78 seconds per question. Take at least two full-length timed mock exams before test day, and aim for a comfortable margin rather than a borderline score.
