What Score Do You Need to Pass the BCBA Exam?
"What score do I need?" is one of the most searched BCBA questions, and the honest answer is that there isn't a single percentage. Here's how the exam is actually scored, what your score report tells you, and what to aim for in practice.
The short answer
- The BCBA exam has 185 questions; 175 are scored and 10 are unscored pilot items.
- Your result is pass/fail, based on a scaled score rather than a raw percentage.
- The number of correct answers needed to pass can differ between exam forms, so the BACB doesn't publish a fixed cutoff.
- For practice, aim to score consistently around 80% on full-length timed exams before you book.
Why there's no fixed percentage
The BACB uses several versions (forms) of the exam, and no two forms are exactly equal in difficulty. To keep the standard fair, the number of correct answers on each form is converted to a scaled score, and the passing standard sits at the same point on that scale for everyone. If you happen to get a slightly harder form, you need slightly fewer correct answers to pass — and the reverse.
That's why the BACB says the actual number of correct answers required to pass may vary and doesn't report it. A passing scaled score of 400 is widely cited by university programs and candidates, but the percentage behind it isn't public and can change from form to form.
What your score report shows
| If you pass | A pass notice at the test center. No score breakdown. |
|---|---|
| If you don't pass | The percentage of questions you answered correctly in each content area, plus the number of questions in each area. |
| Timing | Pass/fail on site; BACB email confirmation and account update within about a week. |
If you didn't pass, the per-domain percentages are the most useful data you have. Our retake guide includes a calculator that turns them into "questions lost" per domain, so you know where to start.
What score to aim for in practice
Because the real cutoff isn't published, the safe strategy is a margin, not a guess. Three rules of thumb:
- Use timed, full-length mocks for your benchmark. Untimed quizzes on a topic you just reviewed overstate your readiness.
- Aim for around 80% on two separate mocks. One good day can be luck; two in a row is a pattern.
- Check every domain, not just the total. A strong total can hide a large domain you're failing, and the big domains (Behavior-Change Procedures, Concepts & Principles, Behavior Assessment) decide most outcomes.
How many questions can you miss?
There's no official number, but the arithmetic helps you think about margin. At 80% on 175 scored questions you'd miss 35; at 70%, 53. Where those misses land matters: missing half of Philosophical Foundations costs 4 questions, while missing half of Behavior-Change Procedures costs 12 or 13.
| Accuracy on 175 scored questions | Questions missed |
|---|---|
| 85% | 26 |
| 80% | 35 |
| 75% | 44 |
| 70% | 53 |
Questions missed are rounded. This is a planning aid, not the BACB's passing standard.

What percentage do you need to pass the BCBA exam?
The BACB doesn't publish a fixed percentage. Scores are reported on a scaled score, and the number of correct answers needed to pass can vary between exam forms. A practical target is to score consistently around 80% on full-length timed practice exams before test day.
What is the passing scaled score for the BCBA exam?
The BACB maps the passing standard to a point on its scaled score but doesn't state that number on its examination page. University programs and candidates commonly cite a passing scaled score of 400; treat the official BCBA Handbook as the final word.
Do you find out right away if you passed the BCBA exam?
Yes. You're told whether you passed at the testing site as soon as you finish. The BACB then confirms by email, and results show in your BACB account within about a week.
Do the unscored pilot questions count?
No. 10 of the 185 questions are unscored pilot items, but they look exactly like the others, so answer every question as if it counts.
